Dallisgrass is a coarse textured warm season perennial bunchgrass.
It is grown as a forage grass in the southern U.S. but it is an
objectionable grassy weed in the Mid- Atlantic region. Dormant
during the fall and winter, dallisgrass initiates new growth in
the late spring. Its wide blades are often very hairy, which make
it easy to identify. Persistent hand weeding will help manage
low populations of dallisgrass as well as heavy fall and winter
fertilizations. Methanearsonate herbicides (MSMA or DSMA) may
be applied in early summer to selectively manage this weed. However,
two or three applications will be necessary every 7- 1 0 days.
Unlike Crabgrass pre-emergents provide little or no control against
this weed. GrowinGreen is currently working with NC State University
and the North Carolina Turfgrass council to find a viable solution
for this problem.
